Rotary Table Hole Covers: Closing the Gap in Dropped-Object Prevention

A small object lost through a rotary table opening can create a much larger operational problem. Tools, fasteners and loose items used close to the opening may fall into the well or the space below, potentially damaging equipment and interrupting work. Retrieval, inspection and repairs can add time and cost to an otherwise routine task.

Preventing that loss starts with the opening itself. When the work arrangement allows, a cover around the tubular provides a physical barrier across the exposed area.

The HSF RH-COV Rotary Hole Cover is a lightweight, high-visibility tarpaulin cover designed to help prevent loose objects from falling through the rotary opening around a drill pipe or tubular. It combines an adjustable central collar with an overlapping closure, allowing the cover to be fitted around a tubular already in position.

Why the Space Around the Tubular Matters

The drill pipe occupies only part of the opening. The remaining space can provide a route for dropped objects, particularly when personnel are working nearby with tools or small components.

Tool tethering addresses the tools attached to the worker or an appropriate anchor. A cover addresses the opening. These controls perform different functions and can form part of the same dropped-object prevention arrangement.

For example, during an approved stationary maintenance task, a worker may use a tethered hand tool while small loose components remain part of the job. A correctly fitted cover can add a barrier at the opening. This is an illustrative scenario; the permitted task and cover arrangement must follow the rig's procedure.

Introducing the HSF RH-COV Rotary Hole Cover

The HSF RH-COV is made from durable, waterproof orange tarpaulin. Its flexible construction and approximately 3 kg weight make it straightforward to handle during installation, removal and storage.

An overlapping radial slit allows the cover to open around the tubular. Hook-and-loop fastening strips close the overlap, while the central collar adjusts around the specified tubular range.

This arrangement avoids the need to slide the cover over the end of the pipe. It is fitted around the tubular at the approved stage of the operation, then closed to cover the surrounding opening.

The bright orange upper surface helps personnel identify the covered area. Visibility remains dependent on lighting, cleanliness and site conditions.

The outer diameter and central opening serve different purposes. The outer diameter determines coverage around the rotary opening, while the adjustable collar accommodates the tubular. Both should be checked against the rig's actual layout.

Fitting Around an Existing Tubular

The opening slit and flexible collar are key practical features of the design. They allow the cover to be placed around an existing tubular and the closure to be adjusted without separate metal fastening pieces for the hook-and-loop closure.

Before use, check that the cover provides the required coverage, that the overlap is closed and that the collar fits appropriately around the tubular. Confirm any edge-retention requirements against the rig arrangement and the supplied cover design.

The supplied product photographs show perimeter eyelets. These should not be confused with the hook-and-loop closure: any use of perimeter attachment points should follow the agreed installation arrangement.

A flexible hole cover is a dropped-object barrier. It should not be treated as a personnel-supporting platform or used to establish a fall-protection rating. Use near rotating or moving equipment must be determined by the rig's approved procedure.

Custom Covers for Different Rig Arrangements

Rotary openings and drill-floor layouts vary. A cover that fits one arrangement may leave gaps or interfere with access on another.

For a custom quotation, send the rotary opening dimensions, required overall cover diameter, tubular outside diameter and photographs showing the surrounding area. Identify any nearby equipment, attachment requirements or access restrictions that influence the design.

HSF can review the dimensional requirement and quote a suitable configuration. Confirming these details before ordering helps avoid selecting a cover by diameter alone.

Customised Logo Printing

HSF RH-COV Rotary Hole Covers can be supplied with your company logo printed on the orange surface. Custom branding helps identify covers allocated to a particular operator, rig or project and gives the equipment a consistent company appearance.

Logo printing can be requested alongside custom cover dimensions. Send your logo artwork, required quantity and preferred print position with the enquiry so HSF can confirm the layout, pricing and delivery time.

Build a Wider Dropped-Object Prevention Arrangement

The rotary hole cover addresses one exposed opening. Other areas may need different controls, and HSF also accepts enquiries for:

  • Stopdrop tools for tools-at-height requirements.
  • Ergodyne tool-tethering products for suitable existing-tool attachment arrangements.
  • Dropsafe nets for relevant equipment-retention applications. Ask about special pricing on available stock items.
  • Dropsafe helideck perimeter nets for specified helideck requirements.
  • Dropsafe barriers for applicable barrier requirements.

These products should be selected for their individual applications. A rotary hole cover, tool tether, equipment net and helideck perimeter net each address a different part of the site's dropped-object or access-control requirements.
